Revised Upper Limb Module (RULM)

The ULM was revised to address a ceiling effect and to make the test useful in a wider SMA population. The RULM consists of a total of 20 items for a maximum score of 37. Activities are graded from 0 to 2. The entry item (first activity chosen by the examiner) does not contribute to the final score.1

RULM activities include1:

  • Bringing hands from lap to table;
  • Drawing a line along a preprinted path without lifting the pencil from the paper;
  • Picking up coin/token;
  • Placing coin/token into cup (on table, horizontal; shoulder height, vertical);
  • Reaching to the side and touching the coin/token; bringing hand at shoulder height and above;
  • Pushing light button with one hand;
  • Tearing paper;
  • Opening Ziploc container;
  • Raising 200 g cup to mouth;
  • Lifting 200 g weight and bringing it from one circle to the other without sliding between horizontal circles (midline to outer circle on tested side);
  • Lifting 500 g weight and bringing it from one circle to the other without sliding between horizontal circles (midline to outer circle on tested side);
  • Lifting 200 g weight and bringing it from one circle to the other without sliding between diagonal circles (across midline, inner to outer circle on opposite side);
  • Bringing 500 g sand weight from lap to table or eye level;
  • Bringing both arms above head—shoulder abduction;
  • Bringing 500 g weight above shoulder height—shoulder abduction;
  • Bringing 1 kg weight above shoulder height—shoulder abduction;
  • Bringing hand above shoulder height—shoulder flexion;
  • Bringing 500 g weight above shoulder height—shoulder flexion;
  • Bringing 1 kg weight above shoulder height—shoulder flexion.
